The next Renewable Energy Committee meeting is:
March 9,2010 6:00PM -8pm at the Union hall.
New updates on the Governor's Energy Office 2010 Rebate Program and also Renewable Portfolio Legislation Information, Green Jobs Training Information and how to access if unemployed
We will review the XCEL Renewable Energy Compliance plans projections for 2010-2020, Home Energy Audit information, and coordinate for the March 25 Sustainable Industries Economic Forum, and answer questions on PV purchase program, XCEL Rebates

  • The IBEW 68 Renewable Energy Committee is:
  • A volunteer network of union electricians committed to advancing the Renewable Energy Industry in Colorado by:
  • Advocating for Good Green Jobs with sustainable wages, benefits, and training-negotiated by the IBEW 68 union.
  • Promoting hands-on training and certification-provided at the DJEATC Apprenticeship and Training Committee’s facilities.
  • Volunteering at "Solar Barn Raising" Events – members helping members install Solar and Wind.
  • Installing Renewable Energy projects at their homes, and at the apprenticeship and union halls –raising awareness of the viability and the future of Green Construction.
  • Informing the community there are skilled trades people ready to Wire in the Green Economy-with small and large NECA electrical contractors ready to install the projects.
  • Collaborating with Environmental organizations, the Building trades, the Solar Energy industry, and the Colorado Apollo Alliance, and hopefully with other community organizations in building a Green future with career paths for our youth, the under-employed, and re-training those workers displaced from other industries
  • Come to network with other electricians interested in installing Photovoltaic Systems. These meetings are open to all IBEW members, bring a newcomer with you. Our goal is to outreach to the membership and encourage members to apply for the XCEL Energy Solar Rebate program. We have information on the NPCP Solar Purchase program for IBEW members.
  • We are looking at developing an Energy Efficiency proposal that would help train electricians to perform energy efficiency audits on there own homes, and at the Union and Apprenticeship facilities. Please come to this meeting if you are interested in helping!

NPCP IBEW Solar Program UPDATE

We have a firm pricing commitment for a complete system cost of $3.99/Watt. A new price list is available at all RE committee meetings and can be made available to all members, by picking up at the Renewable Energy Table in the Front Hall Lobby. The current XCEL rebate is $2.00 /W coupled with 30% federal tax incentive credit at the end of 2009. Residential Grid-tied PV systems installed between Jan.1, 2009 and Dec.31, 2016 qualify for a full 30% tax credit!
Translated Example:  P= 4000W x $ 3.99/W= $15,960. 00 Purchase price from NPCP + $2000 Misc permit, wire, conduit ( $2000 is high estimate)
   P= 4000W x $4.49/W=$17,960.00
  R= 4000W x $2.70/W= $ 10800. 00  REBATE from XCEL Energy as of
2-25-2010 click here for current pricing schedule of Current REC pricing we are currently at Step 4 with 279.567kW available before decreasing to Step 5 with a total rebate amount of $2.55/W
(PTC=(P-R) x 30%)PTC= ($17960-10800) x (0.30)= $2148.00 tax credit

                              Net out of pocket= ($17960-$10800.00-$2148)= $5012.00 PV owner electrician self-installed
  • Note: Electrician owner is performing the labor and costs are sweat equity
  • A 4000W DC system will require approximately 333sqft of roof area as a rule of thumb
  • A 4000W DC system will offset 5834 kWhr annually if oriented true south , no shading, and tilted at 40 degrees per PV Watts calculator
  • A 4000W Dc system will ofset about $490.00 per year from your electrical bill
  • A 4000WDC system's simple payback is $5012.00/$490/yr= 10.22 years assuming a 5% Utility Rate increase

If you have not applied yet
  • Print it out and fill out the application form entitled Solar Program Application
  • Fax to the NPCP fax number
  • OR
  • Email Chris Knight and Mary B the application and when it is received I will forward the pricing information to you.

SOLAR Barn RAISING
  • The IBEW Renewable Energy Committee members have created a Photovoltaic cooperative that helps members who have purchased the NPCP Solar Packages to have the assistance of volunteer electricians who want to get hands on experience installing Photovoltaic systems. This is a "barn raising " concept.
  • The idea is to help electricians qualify to sit for the NABCEP exam in the Fall of 2009
  • by giving them volunteer foreman responsibilities on installations that members may not be able to do themselves. This will be done within the NABCEP Guidelines. Come to monthly meetings to learn!

IBEW 68 electricians have collectively purchased 108kW  of Photovoltaic systems since Feb. 2007.

Thanks to Pete Beverly and his PV Installations class for volunteering their help, and Contractors Cool Solar and Golden Solar for their consistent volunteer efforts on projects such as these. Shawn and Richard supplied alot of the equipment and parts needed to complete the project in one day!

The 2 Photovoltaic arrays have  eliminated 38 tons of Co2 emissions since July 2007!
This is July 2007 PV installation at the Denver IBEW 68 Union Hall. The installation includes (2) 9350 Wdc Photovoltaic Arrays that are a 40 degree awning mount and a  15 degree roof-ballasted mount. These arrays have generated 26,100 kWh annually and have offset $2220.00 electrical costs annually.  These values are 98% of the calculated values from PV Watts!  The 1800W Southwest Wind Turbine feeds the Jack Spaar Apprenticeship Building at 5610 Logan St.
